What is a charitable gift annuity?
	A gift annuity is a simple contract between the donor and the charity that gives a donor the opportunity to make a charitable gift and secure a stream of income for life.
Burlington United Methodist Family Services’ Gift Annuity accomplishes two objectives:
	1. Giving – Your gift of cash, stocks or bonds will help insure Burlington’s financial future. 2. Receiving – The annuity contract insures guaranteed payments to named annuitants for their lifetimes.
How does a gift annuity work?
	• A minimum gift of $5,000 is required to establish an annuity and there is no maximum amount. This can be accomplished through an irrevocable gift of cash, bonds or stock. A formal binding contract is prepared which both the donor and the charity sign, stating the original gift amount, interest rate, the fixed and guaranteed payment amount and the annuitant(s). Each party receives an official copy of the contract for their records. A gift annuity at Burlington United Methodist Family Services is established at no additional cost to you. • Due to our very low administrative costs, we can offer you the highest annual rate of return recommended by the American Council on Gift Annuities for your lifetime(s) according to your age(s) at the inception of the gift arrangement. • On the death of the annuitant(s), the remaining principal is retained by the charity to carry out the donor’s charitable intentions. • An annuity established with a cash gift produces a significant portion of tax-free annual income. Annuity donors receive Form 1099R at the end of each January providing them the needed information for filing personal income tax returns. You may also realize a significant immediate tax deduction based on the amount of your charitable gift, your age(s)and your personal tax circumstances. • Appreciated stocks and other securities may be given in exchange for a gift annuity and can generate very favorable results. A portion of the capital gains tax is avoided (allocated to the charitable gift amount) and part of the gain is allocated and taxed annually at the capital gains tax rate over the life expectancy of the annuitant. • Since there are no annual administrative fees, the amount ultimately passed on to the charity is maximized. While paying you semi-annual income, we maintain a separate gift annuity reserve fund that is invested at the direction of our volunteer Board of Trustees, the members of which are elected by the West Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. Our annuity program has been in operation since 1993 and has fulfilled payments to our annuitants, without fail, semi-annually at the end of each June and December. • By establishing an annuity, you become a member of The Star of Hope Legacy Society*, which honors donors who have made future gift commitments to Burlington United Methodist Family Services. Legacy Society members receive special recognition in agency publications, invitations to our main campus and a special plaque honoring their commitment to helping children and families. • Your heartfelt gift to Burlington United Methodist Family Services is made with the satisfaction of knowing that you have given hope to some very hurting and needy children and families and the promise that your gift might inspire others.
